Caregiving

We envision a society where caregivers and families have the solutions they need, so care is a source of comfort and joy, rather than stress and hardship.

Women do most of the caregiving in the U.S., much of it unpaid, which limits the choices they can make about their careers and their lives. We’re helping build a modern caregiving system so that families can access affordable caregiving solutions, and women have more economic power and influence.

Solutions We Support

We work alongside our partners in both the public and private sectors to unlock solutions that make caregiving more affordable for families.

Making Care a Public Good

Local, state, and federal governments play a central role in creating a robust care system. Our partners drive support for public policies and funding that enable people to access the care they need, when they need it.

Right now, there isn’t nearly enough funding for care. That needs to change. To help build a modern caregiving system, we’re partnering with organizations like the Raising Child Care Fund and Child Care NEXT, which help advocates, parents, and providers at the state level secure new public funding to make child care more affordable for families. Our partners also work to make it easier for people to access existing caregiving resources.

Accelerating Private Funding

Americans spend $648 billion annually on care, yet the care market continues to be an overlooked and undertapped investment opportunity. We’re focused on unlocking new revenue flows to ensure that innovative caregiving solutions reach the people who need them most.

Caregiving innovations can make caregivers’ lives easier while improving the quality of care millions of people receive. That’s why Pivotal Ventures and Pivotal Philanthropies support a growing number of companies, funds, and non-profits working to advance affordable solutions for caregivers and families.

For example, Promise Venture Studio accelerates social ventures in early childhood development through coaching, community-building, and capital connections to drive more equitable outcomes for America’s youngest children and their caregivers. We also invest in venture capital funds like Magnify Ventures, which backs companies addressing challenges faced by families from childbirth through end-of-life.

In addition to our own grants and investments, we hope to encourage other investors to back great companies that support caregivers and their families. We collaborated with The Holding Co. to create the landmark “The Investor’s Guide to the Care Economy”—a report that not only estimated the size of the care economy for the first time but also helped founders and funders think strategically about entering it.

Engaging Employers

Employers also have a role to play in a modern caregiving system, making caregiving more accessible and affordable and testing approaches that work better for workers and their families.

The lack of support for caregivers not only threatens individuals’ economic futures; it also harms businesses and the entire economy. We partner with organizations that encourage employers to create family-friendly workplaces and policies.

For example, Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC) works to increase access to affordable, quality child care so that children can reach their full potential and their parents can participate fully in the workforce. Since 2009, they’ve educated Colorado’s business community on the value of early care and education and now help employers implement child care benefits to better support employees and their families. They are currently expanding their services nationwide, allowing their model and approach to be replicated and adopted by more companies over time.
